Why be Union? This is a question that most people ask themselves at least once in their lifetime. However isn't the real question, Why not be Union? or maybe, How can I afford not to be Union? Anyway you ask the question it still comes down to these basic fundamentals:
Union construction workers make more money period. On average they make 41% more than their non-union counterparts.
Union construction contracts emphasize equality and fair treatment. Union members work in an environment where the same set of rules apply to everyone.
Union members have access to the best training in the country. Wether it be thru our apprenticeships programs or journeyman upgrades courses, members stay on cutting edge of the electrical industries technological changes.
Unions and their employers work together to maintain safe working conditions on the job. Union workers receive saftey training and have established avenues to address saftey problems on the job. The union and
their employers special attention to job saftey and saftey policies, really put teeth into the words "Saftey First".
Fully paid health insurance is another benefit of the collective bargaining process, negotiated on members behalf and paid for on members behalf. This provides union members with the security that themselves and their families have excellent health coverage.
Retirement security is also the fruit of our collective bargaining practice. Once again negotiated on members behalf and paid for on members behalf. The average union pension plan is worth twice as much as a non-union plan.
These are the issues that everyone must address when asking themselves "Why be Union". The answer is clear.
